New AJ Srubas music

Brand New from the Forthcoming Album Rough and Rowdy on Common Loon Records

DOTHAN, Ala. (June 26, 2026) — Following the announcement of his forthcoming debut solo fiddle album, Rough and Rowdy, award-winning fiddler AJ Srubas continues the journey with the release of "Callahan," now available from Common Loon Records on all digital streaming platforms.

A celebrated melody that has traveled through generations of old-time and bluegrass musicians, Callahan receives a spirited new interpretation from Srubas—one rooted in deep tradition while infused with his own unmistakable musical voice.

"This is a tune that I've heard many versions of over the years, especially from old-time fiddlers," Srubas says. "This particular take on the melody comes from Jim Shumate. He recorded it in the early '90s on an album called Up and at 'Em, and it's always been one of my favorite versions."

Born in Wilkes County, North Carolina, the late Jim Shumate remains one of bluegrass music's most revered fiddlers, performing with both Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs while carrying forward the influences of legendary musicians Fiddlin' Arthur Smith and Tommy Magness. Srubas' rendition of Callahan serves as both a heartfelt tribute and a continuation of that enduring musical lineage.

One of the most respected traditional fiddlers of his generation, Srubas has earned championships and top honors at prestigious competitions including the Appalachian String Band Music Festival in Clifftop, West Virginia, the Galax Old Fiddlers Convention, and the Mt. Airy Fiddlers Convention. His reputation has been built on an extraordinary command of both old-time and bluegrass traditions, making him one of today's foremost interpreters of classic American fiddle music.

Backed by an exceptional ensemble, Callahan captures the lively spirit and organic energy that defines Rough and Rowdy.
